
Matthew Crawford
Cain Fellow
Matthew Crawford received his PhD in history and science studies from the University of California, San Diego, and is currently an associate professor in the history department at Kent State University. In 2016 he published his first book, The Andean Wonder Drug: Cinchona Bark and Imperial Science in the Spanish Atlantic, 1630–1820, with the University of Pittsburgh Press. His research focuses primarily on the history of science and medicine in the early-modern Iberian Atlantic World.
During his 2022–2023 Cain Fellowship at the Science History Institute, Matt will work on his project, “Where was the Enlightenment? Silver Mining, Technology, and Expertise in Late Colonial Peru (1780–1820).”
