Matthew Crawford received his PhD in history and science studies from the University of California, San Diego, and is currently an associate professor in the Department of History at Kent State University. In 2016 he published his first book, The Andean Wonder Drug: Cinchona Bark and Imperial Science in the Spanish Atlantic, 1630–1820, with the University of Pittsburgh Press. His research focuses primarily on the history of science and medicine in the early-modern Iberian Atlantic World. During his fellowship at the Science History Institute, Matt researched a long-term history of the transition from botanical medicaments to chemical drugs in Western medicine.
