Keeping It Fresh, Sustainably: How Flexible Packaging Reduces Food Waste
Flexible packaging is the sustainability hero of the processed food industry, keeping food fresh longer while using less material and fewer resources to do so. The general public regards food packaging material as waste and sees only the recycling of rigid metal, glass, and plastic cans and bottles as a way of reducing that waste. Still, 20 percent of the total volume of landfill waste in the United States is food itself. Flexible packaging not only reduces food waste from spoilage, but it also improves food security and increases sustainability. This discussion will highlight innovative food packaging made from modern materials.
