This week we begin our first series within Distillations. In this 4-part series we’re going to look at the four classical elements, one per show—earth, air, water, and fire. Today’s episode is about earth. We’re looking at earth in terms of the Marcellus Shale, a geologic formation that includes sedimentary rock and pockets of natural-gas reserves. First we learn about how the shale was formed. And next, producer Susan Phillips visits parts of Pennsylvania that are being affected by the drilling of the Marcellus Shale.
Phillips and her colleague Kerry Grens produced a series focusing solely on the Marcellus Shale that is running on radio station WHYY.
